LEE AND GAILE  / Debbie Wengert (Kevin Wengert's Mom )

For Lee...Wherever You Are  / Gaile (Mother)
I sat outside before dark today and a flock of geese flew over; making their way South, I guess.  Looking up made me notice a red flower blooming on a tall bush or tree.  The traffic sounds become quieter as the day heads into evening.  The panic leading up to December 25th is, little by little, being replaced by calm...as it did last year and the year before.

I think of Christmas past and ponder about Christmas future.  Never yet having adjusted to Christmas without your physical presence, I wonder how and if that will change for however many years I am left on this earth.  I think of other parents who have lost children; of children who have lost parents; and, of course, of the story of Christmas, which is so very much about a mother losing her son.

Life, as it is, goes on.  Many changes although some things never change.  Wherever you are, my precious Lee, I hope you're happy and smiling.  You're forever in my thoughts.  I love you.
Lee to you and yours during this holiday season  / Debbie Wengert (Kevin's Mom )

LIFE WILL NEVER BE THE SAME WITHOUT OUR BOYS - ALWAYS THINKING OF YOU GAILE.  LOVE TO YOU.

Another Christmas  / Gaile (Mother)

December 9th, 2006 - 9 p.m. - Dear Lee, it's one of your favorite times of the year.  If I could, I'd rent a little cabin somewhere far away for Christmas.  I haven't gotten to the point of really "celebrating" Christmas again yet but try to quietly let others have their own happy holidays around me.  This year, your grandmother, Penny, is not well and your Great-Aunt Cleo is in the hospital again.  It's hard to keep losing people in the physical sense and other ways.  Not one minute goes by that I'm not thinking of you and others I love who are not here for me to hug.  Send some Christmas spirit my way and know that you are forever missed and loved so much. xox

Boone was beautiful; as it usually is this time of year.  Lee's college is so good to the parents but it's very hard to go to the memorial during "Family Weekend."  Seeing all the parents w/ their children....remembering when Lee was at school there and I was there.  On the way up to Boone, I enjoyed the beautiful scenery my Lee would have seen going back and forth.  The drive back was a far different story.  I couldn't wait to get home.

Man's Message in Bottle Found After His Death

ANTIGO, Wis. (June 22) - Years after casting a bottled-up note into a lake for a class project and just one year after his death, a man's childhood message has been found and returned to his mother.

Eleven years ago, a then 10-year-old Joshua Baker wrote the message nestled in an empty vanilla container, his mother, Maggie Holbrook said. He died last February following a motor vehicle accident in California. He had recently returned home after serving in the Middle East as a U.S. Marine.

"I think he was just letting us know he was OK and to keep doing what we are doing," Holbrook said.

The message surfaced in White Lake in late April, just days after the 11th anniversary of its casting. It was found by one of Baker's closest friends, Steve Lieder, of Antigo, she said. Lieder and two friends were chatting near the lake when they looked down and saw the bottle. They broke it open and found the note inside:

"My name is Josh Baker. I am 10. If you find this put it on the news. The date is 4/16/95."

They immediately took it to Holbrook, who said she is now having the note preserved and will display it in her home.

She can remember when her son wrote the message for the school project. She said she always wondered why they didn't put it in the nearby Wolf River, which has a much stronger current.

"I still remember the day he wrote it," Holbrook said. "I couldn't understand why they threw it in the lake. No one would ever see it again. Now I know."

Missing you  / Gaile (Mother)

Dearest Lee, I was looking at this photo of you from the short film you and Ben were in together.  I remember how upset I was when they put all the white make-up on you; put you in a hospital bed; and even had you in a wheelchair!  And Ben had to play a kid with a club foot!

I was happy you both got parts in the film but was unprepared for both of you looking so realistically sick!  (You two were, I thought, the healthiest kids I knew!)

Years have passed now.  I would have never imagined being at the place I am now and your not being physically here; especially for Ben's wedding this month.  Somehow, I have a feeling you will find a way to convey your blessings on the wonderful couple that day.  You are always in my heart, sweet Lee.  Your mother loves you every moment.

Mother's Day  / Debbie Wengert (Kevin's Mom )

Mother You filled my days with rainbow lights,
fairytales and sweet dream nights,
A kiss to wipe away my tears,
Gingerbread to ease my fears.
You gave the gift of life to me,
And then in love, you set me free.
I thank you for your tender care,
for deep warm hugs and being there.
I hope that when you think of me,
A part of you, you'll always see.

Love Lee

Always thinking of you Gaile.

Lee's brother wrote and recorded this song for Lee.  It's one of my favorite songs in the world and gives me hope. I am so thankful I have my oldest son.  I worry about him constantly, of course! (May 2007 - My oldest son is now married and expecting his first child.)

Life As We Knew It / poem / written for Lee  / Terri McLees (Second Mom )
Lee's best friend's mother, Terri, wrote this poem for Lee very shortly after he passed away.  I've always loved it very much and had it read at Lee's college in 2005 for a memorial service.
